Challenge
Customer is looking for a label solution to combine their current label and etched metal plate into one product. The label must have a date code and serialized number at point of application. The label must be chemically and abrasion resistant. A coordinated effort will be necessary to ensure the materials and the ink system work together to meet all of the customer’s requirements.
Label Requirements:
- Ink system and materials must be compatible to be chemical and abrasion resistant without the use of over-lamination
- A combination of date code and serialization is required at point of application
- Labels must be supplied on a roll
- Cost-effective
Solution
Working with our customer and 3M, a collaborative team was established to rapidly assess the challenging requirements for a permanent marking system. It is imperative that our UV digital ink system withstands the same chemical and abrasion testing as 3M products.
Results
By using a combination of our UV digital ink system and 3M™ materials, we provided our customer with labels that met all of our customer’s requirements and drastically reduced their cost.
3M™ durable resin ribbon 92904 offers high solvent & chemical resistance when printed on a range of 3M™ PP and PET label materials allowing sequential labeling of parts at the point of application without the need for over‐lamination.
Our in-house testing standard included testing ink resistance for 100 double rubs with isopropyl alcohol, brake fluid dot 4 and acetone. (Figure 3)
